Gloopy Aliens

*WARNING SPOILERS*
A review of Independence Day: Resurgence
Where do I start with this sequel that, in my opinion, really didn't need to be made? Usually, I am all for sequels; with their similar yet distant plots and their ability to add insight into characters that we know and love. For instance, Scream 2 offered more information into the characters who were then constantly reminding each other that "you can't make a Slasher sequel". However, there have been sequels that I thought were pointless like: "Son of the Mask" and now, unfortunately, Independence Day: Resurgence.
Now don't get me wrong, I did enjoy this film but only really for the special effects and I guess, when it comes to movies like this, the script has to keep up to those cliché moments. I can't say I was on the edge of my seat for the whole duration of this film even though I wanted to be. It's become one of those scenarios where they put all the best bits in the trailer and then the disappointment begins to set in when you see all those moments play out exactly how you expected them to.

On the acting side, I did think the cast did a witty and funny execution of their original or new characters. Bill Pullman as the president was a joy to re-watch as I loved the character in the original film and I love the actor even more. The comedic lines that came from Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch and Brent Spiner were everything you would expect from a sequel to a sci-fi classic and I have to admit I did laugh on occasion. In terms of the younger generation who played a part in this picture I liked them to an extent. I mean what's not to love about Liam Hemsworth? Yet, I did feel like their part in the narrative was extremely predictable and I knew they were all going to survive all the way to the end of the film but I guess nowadays it is hard to completely break the stereotypical plot lines and clichés that are seen in the media we intake.

My apologies that this review seems to be a bit of a downer, I wish that it was the complete opposite. The minute I heard a new film was coming out I was jumping up and down (so to speak), when the trailers arrived I was more than ecstatic, and now after the film I feel disappointed, as if something was missing... Anyway, enough of the moody negatives onto the big positive. The special effects. Right from the get go we were plunged onto the moon where a space station was going about it's day to day business. 20 years after Alien attack number one, the world rebuilt itself: better, stronger and united as one to fight what's out in the universe instead of each other. Of course, in our day and age, we don't have space pods or massive spaceships that have their own gravity but the special effects suck us into the future and provide us with the images of what's to come. Also, who doesn't love to see an enormous gloopy Alien extract itself from its armour on the big screen?

Overall, I did enjoyed the movie but given a choice I would rather just keep re-watching the original (unless of course I wanted inspiration on creating realistic space fights or awesome anti-gravity moments).

Thank you for reading,
Haynes.
